AP Extra Credit - DUE 6/1
Below are 3 options for Extra Credit - You MAY ONLY COMPLETE ONE! This assignment will replace your lowest summative grade from the 3rd 9 weeks. If you score lower on your extra credit assignment than any of your summatives it will not be counted.
All essays should be typed with a cover page - The cover page should include your name, class period, and which extra credit option you chose. All essays will be graded according to the rubric attached. You do not need to put your name or a title on the succeeding pages.
All essay answers should be typed, double spaced, formatted correctly and use 12 pt times new roman font. You will lose points if you do not follow these guidelines and run the risk of your essay not be graded at all.

OPTION 1 (minimum 2 pages):
listen to parts 1 and 2 of this NPR review of the impact of Dick Cheney on the Vice Presidency. Answer the following questions:
Your first Page will be questions 1-2 - your textbook and AP Gov review packets, are a good resource for this.
1. What are the top 3 most important powers of the President? Explain your list.
2. What do you think is the single most important extra-constitutional (outside of the constitutional requirements) qualification for the presidency? Why?
Your second page will be for question 3:
3. Should the Vice President hold as much power as fmr. VP Dick Cheney? Why? In your answer cite specific examples from the NPR piece. (this should be at least one page typed, double spaced 12pt times new roman font)
OPTION 2 (minimum 2 pages):
Read this overview of the current federal budget deficit and how it got this way (also check out the graphs). In a well organized essay answer the following - you must include one additional outside source to support your answer:
How did the deficit get this way? In order to truly close the budget deficit (and therefore reduce the federal debt) what areas of spending need to be addressed?
OPTION 3 (minimum 2 pages):
First, see this by Peter Beinart on the question of should the poor be allowed to vote? On the same token, check out this controversial piece by Matthew Vadum entitled "Registering the Poor to Vote is Un-American" from the conservative American Thinker. Next, see this by Peter Suderman on why many Americans are not paying attention to the Midterm Elections. Next, see this from OpenSecrets.org on money and the Midterms. Here is Michael Tomasky on "Dark Money and Our Looming Oligarchy" in the Daily Beast.
Choose any two articles to read and answer all of the following in your essay analysis:
1. Summarize both articles
2. Why did you choose these two articles for this assignment?
3. React to the substance of the articles. What is your opinion of them? Why?

Option 1: Select one of the following Ted ED Lessons, watch the video and complete all the questions that follow the video under the discussion tab. Your essays and answers to the questions need to be formatted according to MLA standards. I do not need you to put a header on your paper - instead handwrite your name at the top of the page if it is typed. Think questions should be a on a separate page from the dig deeper essay. They must be answered in complete sentences. For the dig deeper questions they should be at least one typed page or two handwritten pages. If typed they must be double spaced and use 12 pt times new roman font. Staple your papers in this order: Think Responses, Dig Deeper Response, Works Cited (if applicable)

Your summary should be one page and the second page of your essay should be your response to the article/blog post and how it applies to your daily life.
